Synopsis: This story, based on a Blackfoot legend, begins by telling how the first man and woman learned to shelter themselves from the elements; it details how to make a tipi.  The legend begins when Sacred Otter and his son, Morning Plume go on a trip to hunt buffalo.  They get caught in a blizzard. and Sacred Otter has a dream in which the Storm Maker tells him how he can protect his people from the elements.

There is a reproducible page at the end of the story that students can use to make a model of a tipi.
